If you’re having a housesitter look after your house and your pet while you’re away, I have a few suggestions to make for a better experience. Stock up, clean out and write it down!
Stock Up
You’ll need to make sure that you’ve stocked up on pet food and anything else your pet needs while you’re away. In our case, we make sure there is enough dry dog food for Ozzy and enough of his favourite treats.
The other things that you’ll need to make sure you’re stocked up on are the household items that they will need. Things like cleaning supplies, garbage bags, etc.
Clean Out
If you’re like me, your house is full. But your housesitters will need some space to put their stuff. I suggest you clean out at least one shelf in your fridge, a drawer in the room they’ll be sleeping in and some closet space. We found that it was pretty easy to make room in the fridge once we threw out the items that were past their best before dates.
Write It Down
Depending on what housesitting site you’re using, they may offer some sort of house or welcome manual. We use trustedhousesitters.com and they offer a pretty comprehensive manual that you can fill out. It includes things like emergency numbers and contacts, your pet’s habits and feeding schedule, and your favourite stores. If you don’t have that option, you should write down the things you think your housesitters will need to know about your pet and your house.
Remember stock up, clean out and write it down.
